As close to selfhosting as possible without actually selfhosting. No nonsense “pay for an alias”, “pay for an extra domain” thing.

The protonmailbridge works fine. I have it across several machines (Linux, windows) all in combo with thunderbird. It needs some setup from what i remember, but it’s trivial. After that, it has been rock solid. Sometimes an update appears which requires you to restart the bridge, but that’s it. It works.

As others have said they have their own repo so you can skip the G-store. I added the repo to F-droid.

I’m not saying protonapps.com is a phishing site but it feels like one.

When I do a search I don’t see protonapps.com mentioned anywhere on protonmail or protonvpn. The logos on there are also semi-blurry and the ProtonApps cert is issued by Cloudflare where ProtonMail and ProtonVPN use Lets Encrypt.

There’s also the who.is differences…

Whois protonapps.com
Whois protonmail.com
Whois protonvpn.com

ProtonMail and ProtonVPN:
Admin Organization: Proton AG
Tech Organization: Proton AG
DNSSEC: signedDelegation

Proton Apps:
Admin Organization: Proton Technologies AG
Tech Organization: Proton Technologies AG
DNSSEC: unsigned

ProtonMail and ProtonVPN also have these extra lines:

Domain Status: serverUpdateProhibited (https://www.icann.org/epp#serverUpdateProhibited)
Domain Status: serverTransferProhibited (https://www.icann.org/epp#serverTransferProhibited)
Domain Status: serverDeleteProhibited (https://www.icann.org/epp#serverDeleteProhibited)

There’s nothing I can find that affirms to me that protonapps belongs to Proton Technologies AG other than their claim that they do.

It’s more the Google bits wrapped in the APK. I know there are other ways to grab it into FDroid, but thanks!

Niiiiiiice good link @astronautsupplier

That might explain the differences

I use ProtonMail for my main email and Gmail for things that will probably be junk mail.

I’ve recently discovered that guerillamail (https://www.guerrillamail.com/) for those one off e-mail adresses works fine.
That or, the bloody vikings add-on for firefox. I moved away from Google completely.

ProtonMail user here. One paid and the other free. Been super happy with the service so far! Also dabbled with Tutanota as well.

I finally figured out a subtle wart in my email setup: Google snootily expects the DNS reverse lookups on my domain’s email server’s IP address to resolve to the exact same FQDN hostname as is stated during the HELO handshake my server makes with gmail.

I have made recent changes to my answer to this. While I still have my google/gmail account, I have been instead using simple login for singing up for things instead of gmail. Also, anything I want to keep getting that has been going to gmail I have either been unsubscribing from or changing the email to an alias on simple login that way if that thing I signed up starts annoying me I can just click a switch in simple login, and they will stop forwarding those emails to my proton mail account. I am thinking proton mail, Bitwarden and simple login all working together is a good 3 way combo.
