Suggestion on categories and sub categories

When looking at the categories and sub categories, I see some that seem to be out of place, could be somewhere else, could use to be broken down even further, or arranged differently. From how I see it, some sub categories could even use sub categories, as well as categories appear under two or more others at the same time (cross referenced), and even viewable as a tree, but not sure if all that is even possible with this CMS.

Not at all saying that categorization is easy, but for instance “Linux discussion” is kind of a strange one to begin with, because this is DLN after all, and it’s all about Linux (although an “Other OS bashing” category would be neat :grinning:), and its sub categories “Linux Desktop” and “Linux Servers”, could be sub categories of “Device Specific Linux”, along with the Raspberry, ARM systems, Smart Phones… Then there’s the “Help Desk” where in reality just about every category could use a Help sub category, as well as an application and Tutorial sub category, as I can see them all growing quite unwieldy over time, since people need help and tutorials on any topic, and there’s apps for anything and everything too. Then there is a “Distro Specific Help” sub category under “Help Desk”, but no “Distro specific Discussion” category, and really a “Distro Specific category” with subs may just be better, although there could be way too many of those (as I said, not all that easy), and the same goes for Desktop environments" for which there are also specific apps and trouble shooting procedures… Networking is also such a huge topic, calling for it’s own category, and subs below it.

“Photography” although a great topic, is kind of a sub of “The arts”, because you also have Audio production, Video editing, Graphics editing, literature… all which could be under “The Arts”, along with “Linux Office” and “Home automation”… All being “Use cases”, where “Gaming” could be too, so 3 or more tiers would be better than just two.

Basically I understand that people have different ways of looking for information, and different ways of organizing their stuff, let alone knowing the relationships between things in order to look in the right place to begin with, where some kind of automated cross referencing really would shine, so finding what you are looking for is much easier. Sure there’s always the search engine, but even in the age of “AI” (way more A than I for now) still cannot anticipate what you are looking for based on use of language, when it comes to information.

I know I’m asking for way too much, but if not for now, then the future, so to all programmers: Linux needs AI, and of the kind that works for us, not against us, as it can be of use from everything from dependency to forum management, and so much more. I have always wanted the Star Treck conversational interface for my PC since the 70’s, and really thought it would have come to fruition by now.

Could AI be added as a new category? It’s really exploding right now. It seems like a new use case for AI is coming out every day and a new AI app and new benchmarks for existing AI applications seem to come out several times a week.

You already mentioned your spotfiy playlist, I’ll have to find the link again, wow it has variety, absolutely increible! I recognize more than a few handful of songa, but that’s about all.

I want a category for music suggestions, so we can help contribute suggestions to the playlist. Also helps for music discovery. Had ni idea about that artist from 1974 doing electronic music, is that animal collective, or another one. I’d like to keep up with all that and keep the music suggestions going.

Pretty Lights is an incredibly talented artist / sampler and digital effect mixer, and helps expose others to exceptional music I may have never heard before without his music. Plus, as stated in the message I sent to help give back on your music mentions, all of his music can be downloaded free from his website. Just put in an email after adding the albums you want to download, and you’ll get a message with a link for each item.

In addition to uncategorized, how about off-topic / non-tech or some similar category for other discussions

@How_many_servers I was treating Uncategorized as off topic but I suppose that could just be seen as a Miscellaneous on topic section. Good suggestion. We need to make sure it doesnt become a mess though lol

I have no idea who you are talking to, or about spotify which I did not mention at all, nor does it have anything to do with this topic:

Better categorization of this forum specifically.

Just think what is more specialized, like Networking is something not all too many do, so it could be a separate category where those into it can share their ideas and escapades with each other, and it also become the best place to go for help with networking questions and issues if needed. Stack exchange has a lot of good categorization. Overlap will happen naturally, but they make for better starting points.

Way too many layers to computing to not use good and intuitive categorization to separate things into smaller more manageable subject matter.

I just thought of this one, for having a need: BIOS settings for Linux, and just general deciphering the poor documentation and poor use of language in BIOS interfaces! It’s a mind blower onto itself!

See you on Youtube soon chief! Oh, and here’s a show topic Jill may know a bit about: Spell checkers; how and why they suck, and who, and what tech is behind them anyhow? So then to raise questions on what or who to do to make it better.

I believe they were talking about the DL playlist we shared but yea not relevant to this thread. The rest about asking for a music section was relevant but the catalyst seemed out of no where.

the issue is that the forum needs more activity for specific categories to be used to a reasonable degree. One of the cool things about Discourse is moving topics is much easier than other forums so its not a big deal to add categories later but yea I guess it could be seen as a chicken or the egg problem.

This one would be good as a megathread but not a category because its so specific and a megathread or better yet a knowledge base or documentation site would be best

:sunglasses: :+1:

that is a very cool idea . . . not sure how we’d go about tackling that one but would be very interesting

I am now realizing that I somehow missed this thread for 4 years … oops my bad lol

I forgot I ever wrote it, for some reason I just got email notice of ‘How_many_servers’ comment!

I just noticed how spell checkers can get hung on a single letter, and be way off as to the word being spelled wrong and where, for instance English-Germans getting IE and EI mixed up for them being used opposite, words with silent letters so ending in ous aus eus… very easy to get confused, homonyms, antonyms… but the spell checker isn’t taking those things into account, and now with AI they should be fully contextually aware to some degree already too, but nope, it just sucks just as bad as it has decades ago! Lately I have been feeling like it got even worse on Linux!
