Recommendation for Opnsense or Pfsense firewall device

Looking for an Opensense or Pfsense firewall device to place in front of gigabit mesh wifi.
ISP provides 1gb Fiber connection, which will be upgraded to 10gb fiber at some point in the next year or so.

Device considerations

  • Power conscious and silent if possible
  • for adding wireguard VPN pass through
  • vlan management.
  • DIY is fine.
  • already own a unmanaged 16 port gigabit switch if that helps
  • Hoping to spend less than $500.

Any, and all, suggestions greatly appreciated.

I use a 4-NIC (Intel) NUC to run OPNsense and it works great.

It’s several years old, but the specs are:

  • quad-core celeron
  • 8GB RAM
  • 128GB SSD

This has no fans and is in an aluminum case for cooling.

There are lot’s of these on amazon and can be had for $200-300, depending on the options.
