Natives In Tech makes the case that romantic portrayals of Native American heroism contributes to indigenous erasure and has asked for the removal of Apache Foundation’s iconography.
Apache’s DEI board resumes meetings each January which may contain a response.
Meanwhile instead of romanticizing American heroes and notable historical figures, all their statues are being torn down and the places and institutions named in their honor are being renamed.
Considering all that, frankly romanticizing historical figures and groups doesn’t sound too bad. Sounds kind of nice to be honest.
Still, I have no objection to the Apache Software Foundation changing its name. Personally, I think it is just as wrong to be quick to take offense as it is to be quick to give offense. It doesn’t sound like Behlendorf intended to give offense. His intention was to the contrary.
