LibreOffice 7.0 - your experiences?

I couldn’t wait to try the new LibreOffice 7.0, for me that’s flatpak format as I’m on Debian Stable. I haven’t had a chance to try it extensively yet but I love the new splashscreen and given what reviews are saying about compatibility improvements with MS Office, would love to hear from those of you who have had a chance to play with it properly!

On Tumbleweed I already had it with the first install. I use LibreOffice for work. The new version looks just the same. Now is vacation time so I only opened it but still have to see what is really new but I do not need Microsoft compatibility so maybe I will not find anything special personally.

I don’t use Microsoft products unless I have no option for interoperability with others essential workflow. Fortunately that is very rare anyway. I think the incompatibilities with MS Office have turned many away for years and though I don’t depend much on that feature myself and use LibreOffice for all my needs (going back pretty-much to the days of StarOffice freeware) I still think it could really boost the move over from MS for those who haven’t yet done it, so am particularly eager to hear about that.

I’m on Mint so, I am looking forward to trying out LO7 sometime in the fall of 2028 :stuck_out_tongue: :stuck_out_tongue:

But it looks promising!

Interesting open letter mentioned by Michael on this week’s “This week in Linux” about Apache/LibreOffice.

Well, to my pleasant surprise, Mint upgraded me to LO7 almost 3 weeks after making that post! I am absolutely loving it. The new icon scheme is terrific, and if I wasn’t already so pleased with the Tango theme, I’d keep it around. It would look very much at home with KDE.

Pop_OS!, however, is still on LO6.4.6.2. Hopefully the latest build will be updated in the repo before too long.

I haven’t had the time to go exploring on LO7 much beyond checking out the latest take on MS-Office support for Word documents. It is definitely coming along. The biggest issue almost always comes down to font-substitutions on documents. Frame formatting looks better and keeps more content intact. I can’t wait to play with the new Impress to see if there are very many changes.

I’ll have to check out @MichaelTunnell input on 'This week in Linux". I’m way behind on my podcast listening.

That’s excellent as I’m surprised that even Fedora hasn’t switched to LO7 yet. Maybe they have in the beta release due soon, though. I do have 7 on flatpak on Debian but am still on 6 from repos for daily driver at the moment.

I’ve fallen way behind on DL and Extend and Hardware addicts podcasts too but TWinL is my favourite and generally can’t wait for the latest

LibreOffice 7 is in the Debian backports. So even Debian has it.

Hello,

LO7 is in the arch and manjaro repositories. You may have to get off the libreoffice-still and switch to Libreoffice fresh, so it will update correctly.
