I cannot back, (Proton) Protonvpn Anymore!

Hi

I have been using proton unlimited since 2022 - 2025. I pay $11.99 which was amazing. and i did love them. Now due to changes back they had beautiful gui VPN with showing speeds upload and download speeds. When they changed it back little time ago to GTK gui app. I don’t have problem with that. But what i do have problem with is it not having those rich features in it anymore. Its just plain says connected with no upload speed or download speed think this switch was 2years or 3years ago.

Now on to the big issue i have been running zorin xfce 16.2 with 20.04 ever since with protonvpn no issues. Now when i go to get support because there was an issue with protonvpn. (When update came through). It was given me repo error. so i followed there commands to autoremove and uninstall protonvpn. Now for some apparent reason i cannot get it back installed it says there’s dependencies issues and it wont install, i have tried all the steps and everything. My guess is its because on 20.04 and i need to upgrade. which i will do just haven’t had the time. But i just wanted to know what the issue was and what caused it.

So when i reached out to protonvpn support. They flat out told me they cannot help me. After i pay for services that’s big no no. You don’t tell anyone when there paying you can’t HELP them. so that’s what really crossed the line for me i cannot back them at all anymore.

So i may be ending my Subscription. If anyone has any alternatives please let me know

There are multiple options for VPN with Mullvad being pretty high up there, check out Ryan’s video about VPNs if you want more info

As for the experience you had, the lack of support of dependencies is certainly because it is based on Ubuntu 20.04. Zorin OS 17.3 is the current version and is based on 22.04. Ubuntu guarantees support for their LTS for 5 years but that is only for Ubuntu itself, many app developers choose to upgrade their dependencies so they can add new features and such. This means that older LTS releases may not be supported by some apps.

Ubuntu will actually end support for 20.04 in less than a month so I recommend upgrading as soon as possible regardless. Since it has been so long you may want to do a fresh install and back up all your files. You can also contact the Zorin team for help on the upgrade.

As for Proton saying they cant help, I am curious how they said it… if you want to share their response to you. I’d be curious of the answer.

Yeah i figured as much i will differently be upgrading

Mullvad is not good VPN by any means I have used it with watching streamers on twitch and they shadow hide your comments. I have tested this at first i thought twitch shadow banned me. But i turned off vpn and then my comments were seen, Thats why i switch in the first place. with ProtonVPN it was fine. So some fishy stuff with mullvpn.

Proton what they said
Basically they said they only support GNOME on Ubuntu, Fedora, Debian for Full support. Which is totally obnoxious i pay to use the software. I know when first came to ProtonVPN they supported ALL distro’s and flavors they had amazing gui to. Now its just plan gtk with no fancy speed or uploads you can see. If they were going to change there Support help they should have put out a statement. They just bluntly told me we can’t give you full support on xfce 20.04 Not even to figure out the cause of issue. Even if they said sorry but your running end of life distro packages that we have are too new cannot run on 20.04 you will need to upgrade Sorry. But they didn’t even say that I would have been cool with it
