2026 the year of Linux on the Desktop? How long before Microsoft realises they have a problem here?

Another frustrated Windows user.. Not my content but I thought I would post.

An editor at the Verge has decided it is time to switch.

Screw it, I’m installing Linux

“I don’t like where Windows is going. Gaming on Linux has never been more approachable. Time to give it a shot.”

“This time I’m really going to do it. I am going to put Linux on my gaming PC. Calling it now. 2026 is the year of Linux on the desktop. Or at least on mine.”

“Linux has been a perfectly viable desktop OS for ages. But gaming on Linux is now viable, too. Valve’s hard work getting Windows games to run well on the Linux-based Steam Deck has lifted all boats. Gaming handhelds that ship with Windows run better and have higher frame rates on Bazzite, a Fedora-based distro, than they do with Windows. And after reading about the upcoming Steam Machine and Antonio’s experience running Bazzite on the Framework Desktop, I want to try it.“

The Framework Desktop and Linux have shown me the path to PC gaming in the living room

Bazzite can get you so close to the dream of PC gaming everywhere.

Intel is already using DXVK in their gpu drivers.

Microsoft’s hold / lockdown on video games is finally over. I think all proprietary code is going away just like unix, nobody wants vendor lock-in, and microsoft’s power is being drained so we can spend our energy on software that is free as in freedom without limits. Nobody wants a tool that is not fixable by owner, and even John Deer is going to realize this.

It’s all about money and ego / power. The more people start fights and demand / force control, or unreasonable limits and rules, the weaker those people really are.

One of my favorite artists, easily top 15, is Gov’t Mule

Most power held goes way too far and is never sustainable, so what is the draw toward only temporary abuse of power? Why? Would it not be better to use much less influence for positive gain for everyone?
