I have used ubuntuMATE, Kali,and Raspbian . They all work fairly well though Raspbian is probably the most responsive of them. Hope that helps.
I preferred UbunutuMate in appearance and such but it was a bit sluggish sometimes. Kali is just weird in general with their builds but also not a great everyday system anyway. Obviously you are familiar with Raspbian.
